Summer is officially here! And in Wizard101 that means a new seasonal fish is swimming around the waters of the Spiral. To celebrate the start of summer and the arrival of our new fish, Lucky Hookline hosted a Fishing Tournament on June 18. All players had to do was log in on Thursday, June 18, 2015 and catch the new Basking in the Sun Shark. Each one they caught was then used as an entry into a random drawing for Crowns.
And without further ado, our lucky fisher-wizards were… *drumroll*

With summer nearly here, it’s time to get outside and enjoy the warm air! Though you’d probably rather be playing Wizard101, these variations on classic favorites will make you feel like you’re in the Spiral. Here are a few ways to mix those games with Wizard themes to get the best of both worlds.
Freeze and Fire Tag
In this variation of Freeze Tag, the person who is “It” is actually a high-level Ice Wizard. Everyone else is a Level 1 Fire Wizard. Just like in regular Freeze Tag, the Ice Wizard is able to freeze the Fire Wizards by tagging them with a single touch. The Ice Wizard levels up every time he or she freezes two people. Fire Wizards can level up, too! Simply thaw a teammate to gain a level.
The Ice Wizard automatically starts at Level 5 and must reach Level 20 to win the game. The Ice Wizard can also win by freezing every person in one round. Fire Wizards start at Level 1 and must unfreeze 10 people and reach Level 10 to win.
Wizard Water Gun Wars
Perfect for the park, this outdoor game can be played with a few people or a large group. Before starting, choose an area to be home base and have each player pick out a particular spell to use. The spell is to be yelled before you shoot your opponent with your water gun. Players who are hit have to return to home base, where they must count to 30 and add a sticker to their clothing before they are healed and able to return. The sticker indicates to other players that a full healing has taken place. The person with the fewest stickers wins!

Hide and Go Eek!
Unlike in the traditional Hide and Go Seek, there is no actual base in this game. The person who is “It” takes on the persona of Malistaire Drake, the former School of Death professor, and must cast spells on those who are hiding. Upon finding a player, Malistaire will yell out one of his evil spells, forcing that person to become a member of his Death Wizarding team. The team will then travel all over the land (or backyard) to find others to enchant. The last person found becomes the next Malistaire.
Wizard101 Scavenger Hunt
To begin this fun scavenger hunt, write down a list of your 10 favorite items from Wizard101. These could range from boots to a pendant to a wand. Find objects to represent these items or draw them out on paper. Have your mom or a friend hide all of these items in your backyard, then work in a team to find them. When every item from the list has been collected, develop a story about how you can use them to win a battle.
Take your love for Wizard101 and use your imagination to change games you’ve played for years into something even more fun this summer!
The Internet age is a great time to be alive! There’s never been so much information available in such an easy way, and allowing your kids access to this massive hub of knowledge means providing them with a great learning resource. Of course, there’s no denying there are inherent dangers to the World Wide Web. So, how do you go about filtering and observing your kids’ online activity without becoming that “annoying” parent? Here is our best advice to make sure your kids are staying safe without constantly looking over their shoulders:
Be a Buddy
Between Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more, there are lots of social media sites out there. You’ll likely find your children on at least one of them! By friending them on their social networks, you have an easy (and quiet) way to keep an eye on who they are talking to and what kind of things they are discussing without hovering over them.
However, you should absolutely avoid the urge to comment on everything they say or do, and only intervene when a situation might be harmful or dangerous. We all have that one great aunt who goes a little crazy on social media—don’t be her! Allow your kids space to grow and interact with their friends.
Block the Bad Stuff
Every parent has their own level of comfort when it comes to what our kids look at online, and to help keep our minds at ease we have the tools to block certain sites right at our fingertips. These options are in most Internet browser toolbars under “Security,” and the blocking process is easy to navigate. Whether you’re restricting access to inappropriate content, a game you’re uncomfortable with or a site your child is grounded from, setting up browser parental controls is easy to do and can give you peace of mind.

Monitor Browser History
Your Web browser keeps track of any online activity within the past few weeks, and even up to a year. Occasionally pulling this up to keep an eye out for any activity you may disapprove of is another method of monitoring online activity from afar. This way, you can approach your kids with any questions you have without looking over their shoulders when it’s computer time.
Have Grown-Up Conversations
If you are comfortable with letting your child use the Internet freely, discussing appropriate online activity with your kid is something every parent should do. Talk about behaviors you do and do not approve of, set strict rules to abide by and present ways for your child to let you know if something inappropriate happens. If both of you know what to expect going in, you’ll see a lot less difficulty down the road.
Arm Kids for Anything
Like we said before, communicating rules for online activity is key and really plays the most important role in Internet safety. There are workarounds for checking history and holes in following social media, so in the end it comes down to the trust you and yours share. Be your children’s friend, but also be their parent. Remember that everything is available online. If you suspect your kid might get into something he or she has never seen before or isn’t ready for, be sure to block it or discuss it at length.
In the end, keep in mind that the Internet can be a great tool for entertainment and healthy growth, but it can also be dangerous. Keep these tips for safe Internet use in mind and trust your gut when it comes to the content your child is allowed to see and use.
One of our long-time friends in the community, Vanessa Mythdust, approached us with a simple question, “Since a derby leaderboard isn’t present, everyone has been pretty curious: What’s the highest derby rank in the game?” We decided to take that a step further for Vanessa and see exactly what other kinds of data we could gather together about her favorite pastime in Wizard101. Let’s take a closer look at what we were able to find out with the help of our Database wizards.
Those Speedy little Devils
We decided to take a cross-section from 2015 to see exactly what kinds of pets were being used in Derby these days. The results were interesting to see: The most popular pet being raced was the Dragon in first, Firecat second, and Unicorn in third out of all the hundreds of pets players own! Here’s the complete Top Ten popularity ranking we found:
- Dragon—10.79%
- Firecat—6.22%
- Unicorn—5.38%
- Cyclops—2.6%
- Stray Piggle—2.31%
- Polar Fox—1.75%
- Enchanted Armament—1.69%
- Bloodbat—1.43%
- Myth Sprite—1.39%
- Brown Spider—1.37%

Taking this even further, there is one pet in particular who shines above the rest as a Petathalon Olympian when looking at lifetime achievements . . . Mister Bandit the Myth Sprite. Watch out when you’re on the track with Mister Bandit! Mister Bandit has run almost 4,300 derbies over its lifetime. Runners up to Mister Bandit, are three speedy Heckhounds named Buddy (2,967 derbies run), Milo (1,882 derbies run), and Romeo (1,721 derbies run).
Take it to the Track Time
If you like to derby, our deeper data dives told us that the perfect time to head to the tracks is between 4:00pm and 8:00pm US Central time. Overall, this is the time most players hit the tracks with their pets. It’s definitely an after school activity. When you head there, be sure to take your Teen and Adult pets to race. By far, most races happen with Teen level pets (with Adult pets not too far behind).
Go for the Gold
As it turns out our player with the highest rank in derby is Vanessa Mythdust herself with a score of 6,225! This really isn’t surprising, however, as Vanessa is a long-time proponent of Pet Derby in Wizard101 and runs the Pet Derby Tournaments and Ladders over on Wizard101 Central . (She even schooled our Community Managers in a snowball race on KI Live)
If you haven’t tried out Derby in Wizard101, we suggest you give it a shot, and there’s a vibrant community of Derby enthusiasts who would love to have you among their ranks.
See you on the track, Vanessa!
