Chat: Use it, don’t abuse it!

Chat is an important part of any online MMO, and today Mr. Lincoln from Wizard101 Customer Support has some helpful tips to keep you and your character safe and out of trouble!

Chat is a feature of online games that many players find extremely rewarding. It can assist you in making new friends and form groups to quest for adventure in online worlds. Chat in KingsIsle games, however, is a privilege and should always be used with judgment and caution. Choosing your words carefully is very important when online!

It can be difficult to understand someone’s tone of voice when they are online, which can lead to communication problems. Choosing to be sensitive to those around you is a great way to approach chatting with others in any game.

When playing online games, you will run into all kinds of people. Some you will like to chat with, and some you just won’t. Remember, in our games you always have the “Ignore” option to ignore someone or you can escape them by switching to a new realm in a flash! Rather than getting into an argument or picking a fight, it’s really quite easy just to move on and talk to other people you enjoy.

We also appreciate you reporting any inappropriate chat using the in-game reporting tool. It really works and it helps us quickly identify and investigate chat to see if it fits into our guidelines and rules.

pirate-player1

Another very important tip is to NEVER, EVER give your password to ANYONE for ANY reason. A KingsIsle employee will NEVER ask you for your password and you certainly shouldn’t be sharing it with anyone else. If or when your account gets hacked due to you sharing your password, the account can be permanently muted or banned depending on the hacker’s actions! That kind of risk just isn’t worth it. So if anyone ever asks for your password, just say NO.

In Wizard101 and Pirate101 there are 3 different types of chat:

  • Text Chat
  • Filtered Chat
  • Open Chat

Text Chat is preselected for you when you start playing our games, and only allows you to chat with KingsIsle approved sayings.  Open Chat in contrast lets you say a great deal. For Filtered Chat and Open Chat, there are certain words that have been removed from the game because of their inappropriate or potentially inappropriate nature. Trying to “get around the filter” is against the Terms of Use. Our Player Forums and in-game chat rules are one and the same.

A good rule to follow is “Just because you can say it, doesn’t mean you should”. Again, chat is a privilege in our games, not a right. It can be taken away if you choose to expose other players to vulgarity, inappropriate language or harassment. When you play online we’re all about having fun, but never at the expense of others.

Being kind to other players can pay off by meeting some really nice online friends. If you are lucky enough to play with family members or real life friends, definitely consider using True Friend codes. You can give these to the people who are really special, but always use your best judgment. If ever you should need assistance with your chat features (or any other issue) you can write to Customer Support at help@KingsIsle.com.

Following the rules makes for a happy gaming experience for you, and for all the other players around you!

Mr. Lincoln

Definitely makes sense………….one thing I don’t think should be allowed by the chat filter is “noob”, because higher level wizards use it as a degrading term for lower level wizards, which turns to getting in fights, and escalades until they are both using inappropriate words, are reported, and get in trouble because of one word.

    • Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 11:09 am

the word noob shouldnt be in the text chat anyways kingsisle made a huge mistake on that word

      • Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 11:40 am

        yes it should

      • Mekalee Brooks / Aug 13 2013 12:40 pm

        But I want my Noob badge…;_;

    • Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 11:17 am

I agree. Higher levels who have open chat will use “noob” in the commons, pvp, and battles. and it is getting more and more frequent. A lot of times players who have open chat will use spaces to “get around the filter” and end up using those bad words against one another. One suggestion: Maybe you can try and use a new filter that will filter words but with spaces. so that if someone is trying to use spaces as a loophole for a bad word, they won’t be able to. but as always y’all at kingsisle are trying hard as possible. Keep up the good work! 🙂

      • ken / Aug 13 2013 12:01 pm

THANK YOU people call me a noob even if am a level 77 thats not right am with you

      • LukeSunStone / Aug 13 2013 1:06 pm

I agree with you people are always calling other noobs and I think that that should be filtered. Plus I have seen players using bad words by using similar sounding word and spaces. They should filter it with the spaces.

    • christopher dragonrider / Aug 13 2013 11:29 am

      Sierra has a good point

    • Ryan Lifeleaf / Aug 13 2013 11:31 am

i really agree of what you mean Sierra Dragonflame

    • Edward Lifegem: level 79 life / Aug 13 2013 11:34 am

I agree, people are using the word “noob” to refer to many people even high levels too! they also use noob regarding to healers because they heal a lot but that’s just a life’s nature

      • Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 12:47 pm

i agree wizards try too find there way too say a non valid word also wizard use the word [noob] on a wizard dew to there lvl.

    • Scarlet Lightheart / Aug 13 2013 11:48 am

I completely agree! Higher level wizards on Wizard101 go to the Commons and when lower levels (like level 5 wizards) try to add them, they are just like, “Don’t add me, noob!” It is disrespectful to lower levels. Just because you are a higher level than someone doesn’t mean we’re different! Making ‘Noob’ a filter-okay word was a huge mistake. How can you even use the word noob as a nice term?

      • kyle / Aug 13 2013 12:16 pm

there just people with no life try to be funny they have no idea wt there dealing with or wt could happened and if you see it report them doh

      • Oscar Jean / Aug 13 2013 12:51 pm

hey scarlet noob is a great way to tell them to go away

      • Shadowstar / Aug 13 2013 1:18 pm

I figured out another word that is kind of the same. “Newbie” seems like a little nicer term. So I just use that. “Noob” sounds like you’re calling someone a name to make fun of them. I don’t see anything wrong with being a newbie. Newbies have lots of potential.

      • kevin / Aug 13 2013 1:19 pm

it is not a bad word and only swear words should be blanked out. i like it when high level people call me noob cause that gives me a chance to ask them to help me and they do help me.

    • Ian Duskwalker / Aug 13 2013 11:54 am

Actually sarah, i refer to the lower levels as noobs, because i am a jokester. i do not think of them as lowly, or discriminate in anyway. I think it is just a bit easier to say “noob or newbie” instead of typing out: “low level person”. i actually have quite a few “noobs” as good friends. and i call them noobs as well. it is a term us gamers have made for the newer people. i actually tend to try and help these new players in the game. i understand your concern, but the word noob should not be refered to as degrading. if you took the time to read this, thank you. peaces O.O

      • kyle / Aug 13 2013 12:19 pm

you have any idea how they feel ian there felling are hurt and they get upset because of your hurt full ness

      • Andrew SoulRunner / Aug 13 2013 1:33 pm

If you are to refer to them as a “noob” use the correct term “newb” which translates too newbie or beginner this will help out imenseley and prevent any one from being hurt mentally and emotionally.

    • Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 12:20 pm

dont see why people find the word “noob” so derogatory it simply means” new one on board” for those of you who dont know what it means we were all noobs at one time so don’t let it bother you just remind them that they were a noob too at one time

    • Justin Covert / Aug 13 2013 12:46 pm

Don’t forget about sore losers (even wreak at pvp) when others don’t do anything because some people cheat because spamming shield and blade to much?

    • connor dragon caller / Aug 13 2013 1:11 pm

i agree but its also a way to let people know you dont know what your doing and might get in the way

  2. Chris DrakeFlame / Aug 13 2013 10:40 am

Wise advice! While you guys continue to try to make it impossible to swear, people would always find loopholes. However, y’all are doing a good job-Keep it up!

    • Gavin Dunestaff / Aug 13 2013 11:17 am

      This is a sad truth…

  3. daniel / Aug 13 2013 10:42 am

kingsisle i think you should let people that are thirdteen that can get open chat for free cause lots of people lie about there age and now they wont have to for new accounts so please put that in

    • I say that is a bad idea / Aug 13 2013 11:23 am

No way… People that young are very immature and they would ruin the game for others. But good idea anyway! 🙂

  4. -_- / Aug 13 2013 10:46 am

too late im muted 10 years lol

    • Aalen Kradzinski / Aug 13 2013 1:08 pm

it was your fault for saying it sry. -_-

  5. blake storm / Aug 13 2013 10:49 am

honestly i lost my account. i foolishly gave my password away. what can i do. im to trusting sometimes. when i got my account back i was muted for 10 years for revealing password. i still play but most would quit. dont ever reveal your password. everything you have worked for will go in to dust. im just hoping kingsisle doesnt put another 10 years on the mute after it finishes. hence the “permenent” this is blake storm 3300 something close to that days left to go see ya

  6. Teri / Aug 13 2013 10:54 am

I totally agree, and thank you Kings Isle for bringing this issue to the forefront again. Seems that the kids always seem to find a way to circumvent the system. If we do report, they don’t seem to care, as they make that VERY clear! They can always make a new account, etc. I am glad you take it seriously enough to continue to address the foul language issues. Thanks 🙂

    • Edward Lifegem: level 79 life / Aug 13 2013 11:36 am

kingsisle has made it that if you have been reported a certain amount of times by different people you can be muted minimum a day i have already seen 2 of my friends muted

  7. donrol / Aug 13 2013 11:01 am

    i love wizard101 do you

    • Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 11:59 am

      yes i do

  8. Kohl / Aug 13 2013 11:06 am

I got muted yesterday for telling an annoying girl to shut up. I used irrelevant adjectives to portray my point. I am completely sorry and I hope I get my chat back. – Tyler Blueblade.

  9. Mark DeathMask / Aug 13 2013 11:12 am

I see ways to block the inappropriate language, and a lot of the time it gets out of hand. I’ll note that the trolls seem to be trying to eliminate the people who want to be able to socialize. They provoke someone into saying something inappropriate, saying nothing inappropriate themselves. I request that KingsIsle review the chat logs, by a human, and find the trolls who try and get the others muted, preventing further mutes of the good players.

  10. Cody SummerShard, Courtney DeathShard, Rebecca SparkleBlood, Kieran UnicornRider, Vanessa HawkHeart, and Brandon Skyhaven / Aug 13 2013 11:13 am

Thank you very much for addressing this issue! I find people avoiding the rules all the time. When in game, I ignore the wizards I would not prefer to talk to, and report the abusive ones. This is an important idea to address and I thank you very much!

  11. wolf soulfist / Aug 13 2013 11:15 am

    wow good advice

  12. Paige C. / Aug 13 2013 11:21 am

The people that swear that are my friends i will ignore and i hate it when you lose a pvp the other people say mean things about you and it makes you feel bad so it is good that the kingilse co. is taking care of this situation no one wants to go through.

  13. Adam Elfarisse / Aug 13 2013 11:28 am

    dear kings isle,
over the years, I’ve played wizard101 allot. But when i go to hang out with friends, its seems that people are very mean. Bullies. people i don’t even know can hurt me or others. what i’m trying to say is, if there is anyway you can stop this, like have a worker at kings isle make a wizard and have them check the worlds once and a while. like a hall monitor, but in a game :P. Thank you.

Ryan lifeleaf lvl 35 life wizard

    • Felix / Aug 13 2013 12:45 pm

They have hall monitors already, but not in houses. At leas they have them in Wizard101.

  14. Chase Giantgem / Aug 13 2013 11:31 am

we paid for the game what the heck guys I mean we use our money we paid for stuff like chat so why mute it? noob is just a word its not like you cant call your friends something for fun you’ll just get muted :/

  15. scot deathhammer / Aug 13 2013 11:32 am

take noob off it making my feelings hurt its so mean

  16. Chase Giantgem / Aug 13 2013 11:33 am

    -_-

  17. Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 11:33 am

The worst is in P v P, when you can’t just leave or change realm. While you can block your opponents remarks – a Blessing! Thank you for that! – you can’t block the insults hurled by their friends who are watching. Reporting is difficult, when you try to concentrate on the fight and it does not help immediately anyways. Any suggestions?

    • Edward Lifegem: level 79 life / Aug 13 2013 11:39 am

yes also in pvp some people tend to report you for “cheating” or using treasure cards. Treasure Cards is a part of the game. They also call you a “noob” for using treasure cards. One person even threatened to ban me for using treasure cards. ._.

    • Alejandro Story / Aug 13 2013 12:03 pm

My suggestion is to change to Safe Chat. I know it blocks you from chatting. But It does help blocking the threats from the people. I am Open Text so I get annoyed by the bad words they use. I feel like they should use phone registration so people cannot fake their age.
      -Alejandro Story

    • Jasmine Daisybreeze Wizard / Aug 13 2013 12:16 pm

    • Andrew Altman / Aug 13 2013 12:16 pm

your right P v P is the worst everyone is saying bad words and noob and i can’t focus on the battle, then i miss turns. 😦 -Boris LionBrand level 74 Death Wizard

    • kyle / Aug 13 2013 12:22 pm

these pvp commanders thing there all that they waste there time make fun of people who are bad at pvp its a joke if you tell me they call them self the best

  18. Bloody Sam Jackson / Aug 13 2013 11:39 am

When ever I go questing and I try to say do you need help they sometimes ether have menu chat and they cant see my text chat I think it gets really dumb but sometimes I wonder if they could see my text or they just don’t just to me rude could anyone tell me please. 🙂

  19. Valdus Dragonflame / Aug 13 2013 11:44 am

Thank you kings isle! However, I strongly believe that in p v p this needs to more associated with it. Many people in p v p are very naïve and many try to provoke others to say vulgar words. Thank you for the stupendous customer support team you are.

  20. Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 11:45 am

hi kingisle i was wondring can playes ask for stuff like i need a girl because it is bothering me alot that people come up to me and say stuff like that

  21. Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 11:45 am

i am glad that this was posted someone in game said they worked for ki and said they needed my user and pass (of course i didn’t give it up) and they said they were going to update for me. i was questioning this person and she eventually left. now i know that workers would never ask for a password. (she also asked how many level 90 characters i had.)

  22. Bloody Sam Jackson / Aug 13 2013 11:47 am

I played wizard101 for a long time till pirate101 came out but wizard101 people were just rude my parents played too but they helped me a lot because they in joyed playing with me but all these people would cures and call me and my parents

  23. Scarlet Lightheart / Aug 13 2013 11:53 am

Guys, Wizard101 is not an online dating network. I have seen way too many people in the Commons say, “I need a guy/girl.” In case you haven’t noticed this is a 10+ game. So I really do not understand why people need a guy/girl. Some people have found loop holes to say things like girlfriend and boyfriend. Like “Boy i Friend.” Really, guys, this is a game for adventures and fun! NOT DATING. I find it so annoying, ugh!

    • Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 12:28 pm

yes! Thank you! They shouldn’t be doing this. Not only is it unnecessary its in a game. If they really needed a partner what good would one in a game do? They could be in another continent for all we know. It’s ridiculous and needs to stop. Heh if they seriously looking for a partner inside a game that is like sad lol

    • Shadowstar / Aug 13 2013 1:26 pm

I find it annoying too. People will come up to me and say, “can you be my girl?”. Ugh! It’s not just disgusting but i completely agree that dating sites are the right places to say that.

    • Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 1:44 pm

I have to agree with scarlet on the dating issue in this game. I often walk through the commons to train my pet and I always see the same thing ” I need a boy ” or ” I need a girl ” I think that an employee should go on to Wizard101 and just watch the chat and see what kids, teens, and adults type on this game. There is a request I have and that is to take out ” I love you ” I see that phrase frequently in the commons and I dislike t very much. If anyone is reading this Thank You Wizard101 is a places to have adventure and fun but in a adventurous game kind o way not fun as in find a random person you don’t even know and go out with them. So many people out there lie about their age and you have adults out there what want to hurt kids’ feelings. So Kingsisle if you’re reading this I really hope you can fix that.

      sincerely,
      Courtney Stormcaller / Courtney
level 35 storm, level 85 life,

  24. Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 11:55 am

this is all good but then you get these kids that think they are running the show and get ppl deleted for no reason i was long ago and didnt even sy a thing so giving children the power of making or breaking a account is wrong i have pot $1500 into my account and believe me if i lose it over a kid and his wrong doing ill be really upset so making a child a hall monitor is wrong

  25. Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 11:59 am

I hate the people who report for no reason i was on my way to the Bazaar in Wizard101 then out of nowhere i was reported. I wasn’t muted or anything but still I didn’t say a word

    • Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 12:29 pm

      ya me too

    • Alex Giantthorn / Aug 13 2013 1:27 pm

easy solution get a tapestry to bazaar it automatically takes you from your house to bazaar

  26. amun ra / Aug 13 2013 12:04 pm

the word noob shouldnt be allowed in kingsile i have seen many people use this word and other innapropiate words.

    • Patrick Dragoneyes / Aug 13 2013 12:34 pm

I definitely agree that higher level wizards call lover level wizards “noobs” but what if you were talking about your own wizards for instance I have a level 90 life wizard, but I also have a lot of newbie other wizards, I only refer to the term when I am talking about them. My point is that not all people use it inappropriately, and it would be wrong to take the whole word out because of it, however I do agree that you should be able to report those who use it to make others feel weak.
      -Patrick Dragoneyes

      • Shadowstar / Aug 13 2013 1:30 pm

I’m level 28 in Wizard101 and I have this friend who is level 61. He’s really nice to me and friendly. I’m too scared to ask him to help me to train on ranked pvp. But, he’s only called me a noob once. After that he said he was only kidding. I just wish there were more high levels out there than him.

  27. Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 12:11 pm

you guys are doing a great job 🙂

  28. rachel deathwalker / Aug 13 2013 12:13 pm

anyways noob is the worst ban is the biggest worst of all mute well is worse reporting lest worse

  29. Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 12:13 pm

this should be a fun game not a dating game btw yall are doing a great job at keeping this game great

  30. Andrew Level 28 Ice Wizard / Aug 13 2013 12:14 pm

I agree, Noob shouldn’t even be a word. People call me noob a lot because i don’t have Ice Blade :/

    • Shadowstar / Aug 13 2013 1:31 pm

I don’t see anything wrong with that! I don’t have a life blade. The newbies are just… “new” nothing wrong with being new.

  31. Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 12:14 pm

if kingsisle wants to blame chat abuse in wizard 101 they should point the finger at facebook .
facebook lets users abuse chat on their site also because they don’t care. if kingsisle were to cut their ties with facebook the chat abuse hackers and scammers would be reduced.

  32. Landon shelt / Aug 13 2013 12:18 pm

I think that people should be nicer in the game i find the most offensive in the commons

  33. Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 12:20 pm

i hate it when people just get mad and curse and use foul language when they can just ignore them

  34. Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 12:27 pm

i really agree with this “noob” should not be in text chat higher levels use it to there advantage and pick fights with it!

  35. chris stormgem / Aug 13 2013 12:27 pm

they should really make some Changes to the chat plus they need more Hall monitors 24/7 Posted at every world in the Sprial so can keep people safe and cant cause as much Chaos.

  36. Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 12:27 pm

Thanks for bringing this to our attenshion I will now be more careful of what I say and try to help people stay away from the bad people

  37. Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 12:30 pm

Noob is just a term that has been around a long time all it means is a new player aka newbie its not bad but some times the way people use it offends others.

  38. alexander / Aug 13 2013 12:30 pm

i hate it when little kids have text chat because they use the text chat to there advantage and find ways to say bad words its really annoying. kings isle fix this issue.

  39. Landon shelt / Aug 13 2013 12:31 pm

totally agree with scarlet lightheart i think its weird. i see people dressed the same i think its wrong people should play the game and have fun if u run into some weirdo just walk away with no word said

  40. UberNoob90 / Aug 13 2013 12:32 pm

I wear n00b as a badge of honor. It’s fine. Dating solicitation is disturbing though. That doesn’t seem right in an all-ages game.

  41. Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 12:38 pm

i think that noob should be allowed

  42. Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 12:40 pm

    cool

  43. Cody SummerShard / Aug 13 2013 12:46 pm

Hello, this is Cody SummerShard again. I completely agree with what everyone has been saying. I have read through all of the above comments. It seems the big topic is the word noob. The word noob is quite frequently used to discriminate and leave out younger wizards just because of low level. Us higher levels were low levels once too, and we probably had a good experience. Therefore, we should not use the word noob so that the lower levels can have an amazing experience as well. Also, another topic, “I need a girl/guy.” Yes, it can get annoying, but it is up to them what they do, as it has nothing to do with chat. If you do not want to hear it, either get Text/Filtered chat, or ignore them using the obvious button that says IGNORE! It isn’t there for no reason. Thanks so much!

  44. Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 12:47 pm

I don’t like the word noob either because my friends, really good friends, are called that.

  45. SethGames / Aug 13 2013 12:50 pm

i completely agree with with the word “noob” being banned but what i don’t like is mute
for ten years cause that is kind of harsh and some people who go muted payed thousands
of dollars on their game i mean it is more reasonable to be muted just for a month.
And anyways why be muted ten years cause i doubt wizard101 will be up for that long!
But i hope it will still be up.

  46. Nicole B. / Aug 13 2013 12:52 pm

It’s so sad, that fights have increased in wizrad101. Someone even called me out and comment ” You don’t look tough,’ like who he owns the place.

  47. Jack watercatcher lvl 90, 62, 10 / Aug 13 2013 12:52 pm

Yes the “noob” word is kinda annoying wish that word couldnt be texted

  48. Aurora Declark / Aug 13 2013 1:06 pm

Istoped playing wizard101 because even i am a level 83 and worked hard and they still say noob about me and they are lower levels! ( 30-70 ) THATS ANNOYING so i canceled my membership on wizard101 and got on pirate101 because everybody is nice there. Even though everybody asks me to date and stuff ( on wizard101 ) i just ignore/report. OH YES! and there’ false reports going on there in wizard101! i think whoever false reports must get a warning/their account banned because they are ruinning everyones fun. I am trying hard to avoid false reports but still, THEY REPORT FOR NO REASON! Please K.I fix this thing! But True reports are ok though. And the word noob i hate it! i quit wizard101 and now on pirate101. For your safety, play pirate101 instead. MUST READ!

  49. Anonymous / Aug 13 2013 1:09 pm

your right words can harm people in meany ways.
on a different subject they should allow us the players to type numbers whether its the word or just using the number key I’m just saying that cause i have had a few time where someone has asked me what level you get somethings at (exp) on pirate101 someone has asked me when bonnie ann gets promoted to highlander at and i had a time at trying to piece together word so that i could tell them “spoilers” she gets promoted at level 57.
I’m just asking where would be the harm in allowing us to type number besides saying your age which wont do much harm unless you put your address which could be stopped by using a chat filter system for when someone goes to type there address, city or state.
But in the end it falls down to the makers of both wizard101 and pirate101 whether or not to allow numbers to be typed.(which you guys and girls at kingsisle have made two great games)
