Creativity at KingsIsle

Today we want to showcase some of the creativity we’re lucky to have at KingsIsle.  This doesn’t just apply to making games though – many of our employees have highly creative hobbies outside of the office as well!

My making the statement that KingsIsle is the most creative environment I have ever worked in is probably no surprise to anyone reading this. What’s really fun to see is how this creativity manifests outside of our day to day work. Given this I thought it would be fun to start a series on the KingsIsle blog showcasing some of this creativity.

For this first installment, I wanted to showcase our very own Executive Producer William Haskins. By day he’s an incredibly talented producer, but at night his creativity really comes out. He has been writing poetry for years. I was able to convince him to share a bit on his background as well as a few of his original works here on the blog. I hope everyone enjoys the work. I’d also encourage any budding poets out there reading this to share your own poetry in the comments section.

Howdy. My name is William Haskins and I am Executive Producer here at KingsIsle.

I started out with the company as Associate Producer on Wizard101, back when it was little more than a lot of brainstorming and some hilarious doodles scrawled on index cards. I took the helm as Producer for the two years leading up to its launch and shepherded it through its first year or so as a Live game.

I then served as Senior Producer throughout the development and launch of Pirate101. Now, in my role as EP, I oversee both games, in addition to our fascinating new projects.
Though I’ve been in the videogame industry since the 1990s (spanning two centuries, yo!) and have been at KingsIsle now for nine years, I have been writing poetry for much, much longer. It’s been a constant thread in my life since before I was a teenager, and it’s something I will do as long as I live.

Robert Graves famously said: “There’s no money in poetry, but then there’s no poetry in money, either.” Fortunately, I have been extraordinarily blessed to be able to make a living in a highly creative environment, which allows me to take care of my family doing something I love and still be inspired on a daily basis by the creative energy that surrounds me. I try to take this forward into my writing.

Anyway, here are a couple of my poems. Hope you enjoy.

One of the (many) perils of commuting in Austin is the dreaded traffic jam. One day, both before and after work, this slow crawl brought me in uncomfortably close proximity to a possum that had made the mistake of straying into the highway when traffic was actually moving. It didn’t end well for him, but it inspired this meditation on risk and, ultimately, mortality itself:

Ode to Roadkill
I saw you at eight
and again at six,
your fur blood-matted,
eyes like ice,
your grimace greeting
the traffic, speeding
to places where
slaves while away
their days and
nights in cages,
swallowing rages.

I wonder if they
ever felt the rush
or risked the risk
to bolt between
those metal monsters
on instinct alone;
I wonder if you
took some satisfaction
in those errant tracks in
the roadside grass and
foolish fear of
the human heart.

Sleep well, my friend.

The buzzards will wait
until rush hour ends
and traffic thins, when
the sun isn’t watching,
then pierce your skin
and take you home,
piece by piece.

Peace.

creative-poetry

This one is an admonition (to myself, as much as to anyone else) to never squander creativity, no matter what life throws at you. Though the metaphor of the pen connects it to the act of writing, it applies to any creative endeavor:

Alea Jacta Est
In fury’s grasp
or throes of pain,
when nightmares stalk
the waking brain,
and monsters wear
the masks of men—

still the mind,
move the pen.

Beneath the heel
of tyrants’ wrath,
when robber-barons
plot your path,
to journey through
the vipers’ den—

steel the soul,
move the pen.

And when the
final die is cast,
each breath connected
to your last,
a matter of
not if, but when—

steal the night,
move the pen.

Thank you for sharing this poetry with us William! If you are a fan of creative writing, make sure you check out the Wizard101 Fan Fiction and Pirate101 Fan Fiction sections. We love to publish poetry alongside the creative prose of our players!

    Wizard101 is cool
    but Pirate101 is too
    which game is better?
First which kind do you choose?

    • cialawfo1896 / May 6 2014 5:20 pm

      I don’t know but u know what would be really cool? a cowboy101 or a ninja101.

      • Anonymous / May 6 2014 7:15 pm

ninja101 would be epic! ive always dreamed of kingsisle creating Ninja101 :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

      • Keena Ironweaver / May 6 2014 8:36 pm

        I would totally love Ninja101! ❤

      • Fair Ashley Holystone / May 7 2014 6:25 am

        Your idea is nice,
        but think about the price.

I was never good at poems. But still. As I noticed, KI made games that were popular to kids earlier and now. Do you know how girls liked playing fairies or ‘ creating’ random potions? Or boys, who’s cries of triumph used to echo throughout the whole neighborhood? Well, Wizards and Pirates now represent those two things. I believe there’s a chance that cowboy101 might be next, since kids ( boys and girls ) like pretending they’re cowboys or Indians. At any rate, keep up the good work Kingsisle! 😉

      • Samantha Angleblossom / May 7 2014 5:24 pm

Hi i’m Samantha Angleblossom! When I created my character I wasn’t sure how to spell angel and angle. So I thought angel was angle. XD

      • Juan DarkHunter / May 8 2014 3:22 pm

That would be fun. make th right thing ;( make a ninja101! 😀 lol

      • alex / May 8 2014 5:29 pm

        yes thts cool cowboy101

    • Anonymous / May 6 2014 6:25 pm

i honestly think Wizard101 is better because the gameplay and story is more interesting… but hopefully they can improve Pirate101

    • Anonymous / May 6 2014 6:37 pm

      The Armada is weak!

    • Anonymous / May 7 2014 10:16 am

      Wizard101 is the best

      • Zachary MoonWalker and Oran Swiftcaster / May 7 2014 3:40 pm

        i agree

      • Anonymous / May 7 2014 4:36 pm

I also agree that Wizard101 is better. Pirate101 only lets you go to level 8 and then makes you pay. Wizard101 lets you go to, like, 10.

    • Blaze SilverFlame / May 7 2014 2:00 pm

      Wizard101 @_@ end of story

      • Anonymous / May 7 2014 4:03 pm

There is no “end of story” it’s the end of an ark. Like the Malistaire ark and Morganthe ark, and next the Old Cob ark. So technically, the only end of story they’ll have is when it closes down. That’s the good thing about online games.

      • Slick Jonah Silver / May 7 2014 6:56 pm

you make it sound so majestic

    • Anonymous / May 7 2014 2:35 pm

      wizard101 is the best game

    • jasmine / May 7 2014 3:02 pm

i would say wizard101 cause wizards tells you were to go and pirates just tells you nothing mostly all you have to do is find out were to do idk 😛 i never played pirates i just heard how to play it 😛

      • Anonymous / May 8 2014 5:25 pm

        LOVE IT

    • Anonymous / May 7 2014 3:49 pm

      awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Anonymous / May 7 2014 4:11 pm

I always leave w101 for a month or two but i always get drawn back @_@ its awesome!

    • Ethan Goldflame (Promethean2000) / May 7 2014 5:24 pm

Well, you can’t really say which one is better. Personally i believe w101 is better and the only reason i say that is because i have played wizard101 for almost a year and it’s my favorite game of all time. In Wizard101 the level cap is 100. In Pirate101 the level cap is 65 i think? i’m not sure but i think its 65. So how could you judge both games? they are not equal. Pirate101 doesn’t have (yet) the advanced gameplay that Wizard101 does. But like i said, personally i think Wizard101 has a more interesting storyline and is just overall amazing. But we all have our opinions, right?

    • hunter / May 8 2014 2:59 am

wizard101 is better because its easier and pirate101 is just to hard to learn i’ve played piayed pirate101 and i didnt get it but wizard101 is easy to get 😛 and i’d choose wizard101 😛

    • Alfred / May 8 2014 2:25 pm

Wizard 101 is 10 times better than pirate 101

    • antonio pierce / May 8 2014 5:11 pm

wizard 101 is so exentric and fun so wizard101

    • Anonymous / May 8 2014 9:03 pm

I agree with most people on wizard101 is better ,however in my opinion, me included, people who have played wizard101 from I don’t know, from beta or like 2010, enjoy and are use to the game style of Wizard101, introducing something new and completely different (but i do like both are in the same universe or “spiral ” we all know and love) will mess with the Wizard101 player’s thinking, instead of turn casting spells, you have a grid to move and attack and do various things. All in all my option for gaming lies with Wizard101, mainly because I’m a level 52 Balance wizard.

  2. jeremy / May 6 2014 2:43 pm

idea for P101 is facial hair as a totem in crownshop pls we want some

      you know it!

    • Anonymous / May 6 2014 6:26 pm

in my opinion Wizard101 is way better…

      • hunter / May 8 2014 2:39 am

yeah wizard101 is way better i agree!!!

    • Anonymous / May 7 2014 3:46 pm

wizard101 for sure is the best

      • Anonymous / May 7 2014 4:56 pm

It’s their opinion. W101 Doesn’t even have a continuing Main Quest, although Pirate101 does. Don’t hate me, but I love Pirate101 a WHOLE LOT better than W101.

      • MegaEpicKiwiMaster / May 7 2014 7:38 pm

    Limerick:
    KingsIsle entertainment is cool.
It is almost as important as school.
I would give it 10 out of 10.
And so would my friend Ben.
    KingsIsle you so totally rule.

    • Hunter DuskThorn / May 7 2014 2:03 pm

      lovely limerick 🙂

  21. Anthony / May 7 2014 10:37 am

I’ve been an on and off supporter of Wiz101 for years now… It never gets old. Never. You always find something new to love about it and the game grows on you a lot. New stories, the voice acting, the cool mounts, subtle humor – everything in this game is to love and appreciate. (Aside from fizzling 3 times in a row if you have been that unfortunate soul before xD)

Now I’ve never played Pirate101 and to be fair, I’m quite content with Wiz101, but the creativity this company exhibits is extraordinary. I wouldn’t have it any other way. This game does a wonderful job at appealing to everyone: the youngsters, the old farts, parents, and those in between.

    Great Job KI!

  22. jj / May 7 2014 11:07 am

You should add a barber so we can all change our hair without having to delete our character and making a new one :[ just to change our face and hair like come on why can’t we do that ingame? that’ll make it so awesome!

  23. Caitlyn Gilman (@bucsgrl0703) / May 7 2014 11:19 am

Poor possum! I will never look at roadkill the same again. I will have to keep that poem in my car next time I have an accidental run-in with wildlife.

      lol. my thoughts exactly

  24. Anonymous / May 7 2014 1:31 pm

I’m creative in many ways but NOT with “Green for green is not a creative color!”

  25. Anonymous / May 7 2014 2:28 pm

    I’m a wizard101 fan

  26. Anonymous / May 7 2014 2:51 pm

Wow. Great poems, and sorry this is a bit off topic, but i agree with Mike and his question. Are there any more 101’s? Also, when is the ACTUAL Live Realm version of the new update coming? Sorry again, just some questions i wanted to ask.

  27. RobertOgreBlade / May 7 2014 2:55 pm

    I love wizard101 better than pirate101

  28. Angela GhostCrafter / May 7 2014 3:00 pm

    i ❤ wizard 101!!!

    • Sly Nicholas Nesbit / May 8 2014 10:22 pm

I played in the test realm. The updates were awesome! Can’t wait till they come out in the live realm. Only i don’t get 1 thing. When you enter Xol Akmul, how come Bonnie Anne says: i don’t think we are in skull island anymore? We are still in Blood Shoals, right?

  29. Blaze AshHaven (Wizard101) / May 7 2014 3:15 pm

The first poem was great. Hats off.

  33. nicole stormtamer / May 7 2014 4:06 pm

Hi i am nicole stormtamer, I would say i think that wizard101 is FANTASTIC cause the story is interesting but pirate101 is okay it’s just you might i want to add some new good spells like wizard101 and make the battle circle like wizard101 instead of moving and picking where to move 🙂 but I ❤ wizard101

    • Anonymous / May 7 2014 4:41 pm

I’m Isabella sparleriver or Isabella rose I personally think w101 is awesome when I get home from school it’s a nice time to play, but also before I started playing w101 I would type like 64 words per minute and now i’m up to 103

    • Anonymous / May 8 2014 5:05 pm

      Dear KingsIsle,
I do not know if this is the BEST place to put it,but I really LOVE Wizard101 and Pirate101.Though,I adore Wizard101 WAAAYYYYY more because it reminds me of Harry Potter but different.I admire your creativity and your way of thought,I wish I could be just as amazing.I hope to one day, when I am old enough to work under KingsIsle staff as an artist (or whatever you call those people who make AMAZING ideas for your animated games).I’ve been playing Wizard101 since I was able to type on the computer! I dream about casting spells and doing the good-willed for my fellow wizard students, I wish I could live in this world that you made.Sometimes I think that Wizard101 and Pirate101 are in the same universe,so I was thinking, could that be possble?Anyhow,I just happened to be breave enough for once to say that today for some reason.Thank You,KingsIsle for making my dreams expand into the universe and to fill them with light to defeat all know evil,a child’s spirit is one filled with joy and hope, filled with light, and you helped that happen.Filling childern who may not have a mom or dad with hope, and childern who could never be happy with joy!I thank you for this, and William Haskins you are my idol.

      With Care,

A shadow in the darkness, never be be known

  43. Anonymous / May 7 2014 5:57 pm

Gosh I love these games. There is just so much positive energy everywhere! Love the poetry, I suck at most things art-related but there is so much fun to be had with Kingsisle. My only request is, don’t stop making the games super awesome!

  44. Anonymous / May 7 2014 6:02 pm

Both Pirate101 and Wizard101 are great games, but I think Wizard101 beats it because its been around longer (and personally I like it too).

  45. Scarlet Ghoststone / May 7 2014 6:05 pm

oh sorry I did not know this wasn’t the problem center. Here is my poem:

Roses are red, violets are blue , but what color is wizard101?

  50. Blaze Dragonbane / May 7 2014 6:22 pm

Wizard101 and Pirate 101 are really both amazing!
I play and play all night and day
Until the time comes to go away…
But this game is totally off the chains!
From the ancient ruins of Dragonspyre,
    To Cool Ranch’s rocky mountains
I battle all the enemies and sometimes help a friend in need!
So now it’s time to go,
but I just want you to know…
    Wizard101 and Pirate101 RULE!!!!!
