Dworgyn’s Look Back at 6 Years of Wizard101
I’ve played Wizard101 since the beginning, and it’s been a lot of fun seeing how things have changed and evolved over time. Specifically for this blog post, I was asked to answer the question, “What were my favorite highlights each year?” That’s actually not as easy a thing to answer as it seems! I’ll break my favorites down by year, and hope I can give a little explanation to all my choices
2008
Wizard101 was brand new in 2008 and we were all busy running around The Spiral – on foot . . . without a mount! For me, this year was a time of discovery and I couldn’t have been happier finishing off the original final boss of Wizard101, the Jade Oni in MooShu. The Spiral was so brand new that we saw Halloween decorations for the first time in October and a then a Yuletide Tree in December. I think these festive touches were my favorite updates in 2008. There’s nothing quite as fun as seeing the world you know suddenly transformed with spooky or festive cheer.
2009
This is where it starts to get hard to choose just one update as my favorite. 2009 gave us Dragonspyre, followed by housing, then Open Chat, then Grizzleheim, then mounts, and finally school housing! How do you choose! I suppose looking back if I just had to choose one, I’d pick Dragonspyre. The epic conclusion of the first story arc was amazing. There is nothing like a new world to explore, and Dragonspyre specifically still holds a special place in my heart. I couldn’t be happier crushing Malistaire in his Great Spyre, and feel like I know the place like the back of my hand. It was an awesome feeling to know you saved the Spiral!
2010
This is also a hard year to choose a winner, but I’m going to have to say the introduction of Advanced Pets really changed the face of the game. Building the perfect pet is still a huge craze and racing pets was a favorite pastime of mine – I still wear my 1st age pet warlord badge with pride! We all waited for Celestia for a long time, but Advanced Pets changed the game forever.
2011
While I liked Zafaria and leveling my wizard, I really fell in love with the world of Wysteria, which would be my favorite update of 2011. I really liked the idea of a magic school competition and unraveling the mystery of this new world was a lot of fun. Exploring the strange schools of magic and meeting the off-the-wall professors that taught in Wysteria was a particular highlight. Zafaria would definitely be a very, very close second however.
2012
My life changed in 2012 as I transitioned from Wizard101 fan site owner to employee at KingsIsle, and while you can’t technically say the release of Pirate101 was an expansion to Wizard101 . . . it was just as important to me. Pirate101 took a universe I loved and gave it new depth. With Pirate101, I was seeing the game from the outside in, and it added so much richness to the Wizard101 mythology. That’s not to say that Avalon wasn’t one of the most awesome expansions Wizard101 ever had in my opinion, and I suppose if I strictly had to choose a Wizard101 update, Avalon would be it. I still have nightmares about the creepy house with Spider Legs!
2013
For me, my favorite update in 2013 was the new Halloween Quest with possessed vegetables and the hilariously spooky Nosferabbit. The Halloween quests really hadn’t changed since 2008 and their addition was a really welcome treat. In fact, I can’t wait to see these quests resurface in 2014!
2014
I have to give it up for fishing this year . . . even though the end of Story Arc 2 is about the most amazing thing ever. I just love the new fishing update! I love all the new hilarious fish, the stackable aquariums, and the fun way to spend my energy when I’m not gardening. Fishing brought new depth to an already incredible game and it was something that players have wanted for a long, long time.
Thanks for taking this look back with me throughout the years! While my favorite choices certainly may not be yours, I’m happy I was able to share them with you. Happy Birthday Wizard101!

I think celestia was the best update I’ve been a member since 2008. I think waterworks and max lvl 60 was the best update while 70-100 I didn’t think was necessary. I still love the game I just think shadow magic was a bad update. I hope you guys keep the game going great game!

my firs time l play thas game i was s happy i plat it when it came out so i so happy you have got 6 years so have a happy 6 birthday wizard101.
I love fishing so far. I made it to Grizzleheim Fishing and I did not even need to catch the Owl-Eyed Pike, which I think is the rarest fish in the whole game. I caught it while in an attempt to catch the Mechanical Armorhead. That is so cool, I think Fishing is the best Update so far. Thank you for adding the Fishing Update, guys! Mason Silverforge lvl 44.

Really? The Owl-Eyed Pike is a rare fish and it looks like an OWL! I know ’cause I have one. Good luck in getting one!
i think the best one was when they decided to bring pets in to fight and when they made winterbane and pagoda

To get the armor head you have to go to Cyclops lane and catch a Death Fish

i love fishing it is the besr update so far. i got a bear fish that is a baracudu i think lol. but i did catch a lot of fish sandwich

I really loved the crab alley update where it used to be for special holiday quest and now its a story place plus they had added water works which was amazing but i dunno if water works is still up
Omg I remember also whe the game had just started and we had to be on foot also it took long to get there but still manage to do it. I loved PvP but recently everything about it has changed, I don’t really like it anymore. But I also loved it when it was just at lvl 50 (grandmaster) I was ok with lvl 60 but when they changed the caps higher to 70-100 didn’t really like it as much anymore. Don’t play as much cause of that but its still a good game.
I have only been playing for a year, but I like all of the monthly specials that come along. The fishing quests are fine. I would like to see more quests for the fishing. I do want the fishing to continue though, even if it is only at a minimal level. I like the game too much to quit, too addicted to it. Thanks a billion!!

iink one of the best updates was dragonspyre dragonspyre was a great world probly one of my favrite worlds and the pets can’t forget the pets the pets make everything in the game even save your life allot personly avalon wasn’t the best world avalon almost inpossable to beat the one boss called the jabberwock with out the help of allot of people those are my comments for the game great game.
I’ve done a lot of research on this game and so far i loved it! even though i just started i hope that there will be more updates soon to come.
I came into the game just a bit before Winter tusk launched. I love Grizzle heim and Winter tusk. What prompted me to become a member is I needed to know what was down that rope (crab alley) and the rest is history. Been a member ever since. Love the fishing addition very much, thx
My favorite update was also the fishing update. I caught some pretty rare fish. My favorite was the Owl-Eyed Pike. I know you guys are going to make a lot more awesome updates. I can’t wait!!!
The Bosses in the game are getting to hard for some of the school wizards to beat. You cannot take a life wizard into a storm or balance battle and win.
My favorite update was either housing or gardening; I don’t know what to choose! I love owning my own beautiful mansion, as well as controlling my own wonderful garden. It’s hard to tell which one I love more!

Wizard 101 has gone though many updates since the beginning and all of them are necessary and fantastic! A game could only grow when and if things are tweaked, added, and changed. I love Wizard 101 and I’ll always recommend this game, as well as the others, KingsIsle has produced and spent a great effort of time on. A game is only as good as the people behind it and the KingsIsle Entertainment has many bright, intelligent, and well crafted employees. Thank you KingsIsle!

My personal favorite update for wizard101 would have to be going to level 100. it really is nice to have someone that high of a level to help you. that is if they teleport to you LOL. -James Rain level 34 fire.
I really enjoyed reading through these, I think I remember the release of Grizzleheim and open chat coming into the game, I fell out of it I think in 2011 after the release of Wysteria and haven’t played the game since until a month or so ago. I still can’t believe how much has changed and is still changing! I remember how awesome this game was 5 years ago and it’s still so much fun!
I really like the fishing and the ability to level up even tho your not a member. I love this game!!! I really like all the updates even though i can’t get to most of them but i still have fun playing.

I think I have to agree and choose the funny Nosferrabbit Halloween update. That was pretty much the only time Kingisisle GAVE out a quest where you didn’t have to buy anything in crowns to get a pet that would have a healing talent ability. ( energizing battery) I thought the storyline was funny and cute, and I really liked that you could buy temporary transformations at the end of the dungeon for only 100 gold. ( rather than 500 gold or 80 crowns in the crown shop) so that’s me 🙂
Also, another one of the awesomest updates would be stitching! 🙂
The best updates of the game is ALL of it. I just love it all! I just do not like the one with the Spiral Cup Gauntlet….My question is: what is so unique of the Spiral Cup Gauntlet? I really love it, but, what do people like most about it? Is it that pet drop on the last battle? or the plants? What if you took those out, would people not want to go in there? Would that make the gamers more happy? I would love it if anyone could use that Spiral Cup Gauntlet…

I think that the levels 70-100 were unessesary. For someone who has been playing since 2010 and has only got to level 51 that’ll probably give me another 4 years (if they don’t higher the levels) and i’ll be grown up by then. What a thrill. I don’t like fishing either.
The best update is definitely when they introduced new hair. Because I don’t like the hair I chose before (round bunches. ICK!) 😛

I think the best update was when the new hair was introduced and the new eagle mount. I also like the new test realm for members only. TY for making Wizard101 a great game with awesome players. 🙂
The Salina Gomez Quest was so fun when it came out to help promote her new CD. I was a huge fan of her at the time. But my favorite updates would have to be the Bazaar and Celestia!

I’ve been here since the beginning, and still playing. I have to say I loved dragonspyre. Cause it was long but yet interesting in all the quests. My second, would be, Wisteria. I loved the housing the decorated with. (wishing we had that housing). I loved it when the brought housing in for us to decorate, it was a favorite of mine as well. I have been playing Wizard101 since it first came out. I have enjoyed it then and i still do now. They have done a lot with it and it really has progressed since then. This game is really fun i recommend this game to all!
I loved the new Halloween edition to W101 last year, as have been a w101 player since the beginning, it as exciting for a new Halloween quest…as well as funny xD
my favorite update was the spiral cup gauntlet it has a cool badge but not so enthusiastic about you have to be friends with the owner though trevor legendbringer level sixty six

My favorites are DragonSpyre and Celestia. I love the “stuff’ I can get in both worlds, to make my homes beautiful and unique. I love that I never get bored, even when I’m broke. I love to quest, but happy to garden, fish, train pets, tour friends homes, and decorate my homes. Thanks K I, for giving me a beautiful world where I can meet people, make friends, and talk to them for as long as I can stay awake!
I really don’t know…..Wizard101 is the best! Maybe what I like is that you can play dungeons with friends!
