Waxing the Wizard101 Nostalgia for “Old Stuff Day”

Did you know that March 2nd is “Old Stuff Day”? We had never heard of this strange holiday before, but sure enough, there it was, listed on daysoftheyear.com – complete with five fun ways you can celebrate this unique day of the year:

  1. Be nostalgic
  2. Appreciate vintage items
  3. Declutter
  4. Learn
  5. Reflect

We know we have a lot of faithful players who’ve been playing right from the beginning, or even before the beginning, in the Beta testing phase. Leah Ruben, our Senior Producer for Wizard101, was right there as well . . . only at the time she was the Associate Producer.

When asked about those old days she had a couple of fun thoughts to share, “At the time, KingsIsle was a lot smaller, and we wore lots of hats.  During an average week before launch, I might have been addressing labels for our alpha discs, in game placing sound effects, ordering dinner for people who were working late, helping to design the prototype for our first website and message boards, or in our VO booth, screaming like a banshee!” She continued, “It’s fun to look back at those old times, and when I hold an old Alpha Disc in my hands, those memories come flooding back.” (You may have seen Moolinda Wu showing off one of these discs in the recent KI Live.)

A lot of players have also been great collectors from day one, gaining several items that are very hard to get these days. Items like the FOG Staff, which was a promotional weapon only available by code from the Fun Online Games (thus F.O.G. Staff) magazine. You’ll see us from time-to-time breaking out old items for a special Throwback Thursday sale in Wizard101 or through a fan site promotion. What’s old can always become new again!

old

Along with time comes clutter! We understand it can be hard on your inventory space when you’re an avid collector of fun old items. Remember when you couldn’t put that FOG Staff on the walls of your house and had to keep it in the bank? We know you do! It’s quite amazing to see all the features that have been added over time to help deal with the daily clutter of farming and collecting items in Wizard101. Seed vaults, mannequins, weapons on housing walls . . . who knows what the future will hold to further help you? One thing is for sure: today is a great day to head to the Bazaar or your favorite vendor to offload some old items you just don’t need to keep around anymore.

As for learning from the past, there’s always valuable advice that’s still sound . . . even seven years later! Check out this old blog post from one of our original blogging stars, Tipa from Westkarana.com. Even today, it has great advice for building smaller decks and using the reshuffle card (even though some commentary on using pets for their cards is a bit dated with the invention of Advanced Pets).

And if you’re looking to reflect on Old Stuff Day today, we kindly ask you to leave a comment on this blog post and let us know what you’ve learned through all your years of playing Wizard101. If you’re looking for a tale to tell, maybe start with some of these questions to get you going:

  • What’s the first house you ever purchased?
  • What’s the first mount you ever rode?
  • What’s the first plant you ever grew?
  • What’s the oldest item in your backpack?

Let’s hear about your favorite old memory, item, or thought from the past years of playing Wizard101!

See you in the spiral, old timers.

  3. Samuel Sandslinger / Mar 2 2016 10:55 am

Samuel Sandslinger has a couple of houses that are completely full of … stuff. I love to cover the yards with all of the various trees and bushes that come my way. Sometimes I can’t find the house for all the shrubbery. The first mount I ever rode is a sabertooth tiger my daughter gifted me with. And the first plant I ever grew was, what else? A dandelion. Is there a way to find the date you started playing Wizards101? It’s been at least three years since we started, but possibly longer…

I like telling other players about how when I first started playing the game that Dragonspyre was the final world. And that Malistyre was the big boss at the end to beat.

Can’t exactly remember the answer to all the questions, but here are answers I’m confident about:
    First house?: Wizard’s Watchtower
First mount?: the broomstick (let’s face it all first timers rode one at one point)
    First plant?: Pink Dandelion

    • Fallon StormCloud / Mar 2 2016 7:13 pm

I remember riding the broomstick on my oldest accounts, but my newer one that is now my main, I have the broomstick in my bank lol

  10. Anonymous / Mar 2 2016 1:20 pm

My favorite old thing about the game was when you had to find the teleporters in the areas and remember where each one went to, it made it more of an adventure in my opinion

  11. Artemis / Mar 2 2016 1:46 pm

What’s the first house you ever purchased?

That would actually probably be the wooded cottage! I had an enchanted forest complete with imps and dark sprite pets as well as a spider farm (my goal was/is to have one of every spider in the game… I’m still missing ONE!!) Unfortunately I emptied the house and sold it to get a larger house later but the enchanted forest and the spider farm are much more comfortable in my Wyrd House (my favorite house by the way!!)

What’s the first mount you ever rode?

I actually walked much longer than most. I think the first mount I ever owned was the Swift Gryphon mount that came with the Epic Bundle Gift Card!

What’s the first plant you ever grew?

This one I can’t really remember too well… whatever seeds were given to me during the green acres task so probably some sort of dandelion

What’s the oldest item in your backpack?

The contents of my backpack change every day practically!! I think the oldest Item I still own is my death leprechaun (Sir Bentley) He was the first pet I purchased in the game 🙂 Generally he runs around my death house but I have trained him up a bit and I had him equipped for a year while I was figuring out how the pets and their abilities worked in game.

  12. MythMama / Mar 2 2016 2:45 pm

What I have learned from my years of playing is that the only way to be sure you will need something (gear, seed, treasure card, etc.) is to sell it. Once you have liberated that space you will get a new challenge. That being said, I must go – I have to re-collect those items for a new recipe … :O)

  13. My first house was the Life house for my (of course) Life wiz. First plant was dandelion. First mount was a broom, but ditched it as soon as I got my all-time-favorite The Nightmare. The oldest thing I know for sure is the birthday hat I got for my 1 year Wizard-versary. 🙂

  14. Paw / Mar 2 2016 5:13 pm

The oldest thing(s) in my backpack is the gear I wore way back when I defeated Malistaire, that I keep until this day.

  17. Fallon StormCloud / Mar 2 2016 7:17 pm

My first house was the balance house even though the char was storm.

The first mount I had on my older account that I rode was the bruin ram I had bought.

The first plant I grew was a dandelion because of course it gives you the quest to grow the dandelions.

The oldest thing in my bank is the 1 day broomstick you get at the beginning, because I put all the non-perm mounts in my bank.

My first house was the Wooded Cottage back when houses just came out. The first ever mount that I rode was the Charity Meowmodon when I got it gifted to me. The first plant that I grew was probably the Pink Dandelion. The oldest item in my backpack has to be the Coat of Stomping that I bought back in the old Wizard101 days. My favorite moment is when the old PVP arena didn’t have matchmaking. You literally ran into the arena with others and that’s who you faced. Good old Wizard101

  22. Caroline / Mar 2 2016 9:50 pm

I remember when the crown shop first came out and I rode on the charity mount and bought seraph wings

  23. Cowan DeathPyre / Mar 2 2016 10:16 pm

When I started playing Wizard101 in 2009, I had no items, no friends, and no anything. As I started questing, I leveled up, I made new friends and played with each other for a long time! And we’re still friends! The first house I ever purchased was the Wooden Cottage. I had it for a while then I sold it. Then I bought the Ice House. Then I changed it into a Christmas wonderland and now my wizard lives in The Acropolis. The first rental mount I wore was a Broom Stick. The first permanent mount I wore was the Reindeer Sleigh Mount. The first plant I grew was the Yellow Dandelion. Not sure about the oldest item. Wizard101 is a very amazing game! Keep up the amazing work! -Cowan DeathPyre

  24. Sabrina Summerbreeze / Mar 2 2016 11:23 pm

My first house was the wooded cottage. I might even still have it.
My first mount was a broomstick I won from a fight in Unicorn way.
My first plant was a dandelion and I accidentally killed it.
Finally, the oldest item in my backpack is a pair of Stormweave shoes from 4 years ago. I still use them sometimes as part of my all white death and storm resist outfit.

  29. Si1verwing / Mar 6 2016 12:05 am

My first house was the Wooded Cottage–I still have it, actually! Don’t know why though, it’s completely empty and I don’t use it. Perhaps it’s just nostalgia.
The first mount I rode was the Horned Sweeper–a one-day mount I won on Unicorn Way. Hahaha.
Ha! I think everyone’s first plant was the Dandelion! The first time I ever saw it need tending to it was in need of pollination and I thought the symbol meant it had pests, and i panicked–then I saw that it was just a need and I later saw what actual pests looked like.
The oldest item in my backpack is my Starter Deck!
